PAEC Foundation Signs Contract for 5MW Hydropower Project at Chashma
ISLAMABAD: PAEC Foundation has signed a contract to establish a 5MW hydropower plant at the outfall of the Chashma-5 Nuclear Power Plant, expanding its renewable energy portfolio and adding to Pakistan’s clean electricity generation capacity.
The Foundation Hydel Power Plant Unit-05 (FHPP-05) is expected to generate approximately 30.66 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually for the national grid once operational. Electricity generation is scheduled to begin by September 2029.
Contract Signed for Chashma Hydropower Plant
The contract was signed at PAEC Headquarters between PAEC Foundation and a joint venture comprising China Ocean Engineering Construction Corporation Ltd., Ningbo Water Conservancy and Hydro Power Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd., and Habib Rafique Engineering (Pvt.) Ltd.
The project will utilise the available hydropower potential at the Chashma site, with the aim of making more efficient use of water resources while generating renewable electricity.
PAEC Expands Clean Energy Portfolio
The FHPP-05 project will be the fifth hydropower plant established by PAEC Foundation and will add 5MW of clean electricity to the national grid.
According to PAEC, its six nuclear power plants currently have a combined generation capacity of 3,530MW, supplying clean, low-cost electricity to the national grid.
The new hydropower project will complement PAEC’s existing contribution to Pakistan’s energy sector while expanding its renewable energy capacity.
